For almost a century the Carmelites at the monastery in Holladay, a group of cloistered nuns who dedicate their lives to pray for the world, have depended on their annual fair as their main source of income.
Last year marked the first fair since the pandemic, and it returned by welcoming once again all people, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, from all over the valley. Each year festivities include a silent auction, live entertainment, raffles, a variety of food and children’s games. The grand give away in the raffle this year is a 2023 Kia Sportage SUV AWD, donated by Jerry Seiner Kia. Auction items include items such as jewelry, artwork made by the Carmelites and sports memorabilia.
The fair opens at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17. However, the 11th annual Run for the Nuns 5K run/walk will start at 8 a.m.
Parking at the monastery is limited, but a free shuttle bus will be available. It will run every 30 minutes beginning at 10:30 a.m. and will depart from four locations, where parking will be free. For locations, visit https://www.carmelslc.org/carmelite-fair/
Mother Therese Bui, the Carmel’s superior, said the nuns are hoping and praying for people’s support. “We will be most grateful for your generosity,” she said, adding that they always keep everyone in their prayers.
In addition to the fair, a golf tournament to benefit the nuns will be held Saturday, Sept. 9 at Mountain Dell Canyon Golf Course with the shotgun start at 8 a.m. For information, contact Daniel Garcia at dvgarcia@gmail.com
