Despite the ongoing pandemic, most Utah Catholic Schools sports teams were able to enjoy a full spring season this year. Managing social distancing, mask mandates and other restrictions, they nevertheless showed their mettle in competition across the Wasatch Front.
JUAN DIEGO CHS
Baseball
Juan Diego baseball finished the season 12-12 in 4A play. The Soaring Eagle played Mountain Crest in the super regionals (best of three) on May 13. The Mustangs beat the Soaring Eagle 1-0, 11-1 in the first two games.
Girls Golf
The Soaring Eagle team finished third at the 4A state tournament May 12-13 at Meadowbrook Golf Course behind Pine View and Dixie with a score of 130.
The team consisted of Grayson Gagnon, Cabria Walters, Shayne Farnsworth, Ashley Cutshall, Sayda Worrall and Jazmin Asmar. Gagnon and Walters made First Team Allstate.
“We’ve never had a girl do that before,” coach Jason Andersen said.
Farnsworth and Cutshall made Second Team Allstate.
Lacrosse
The Juan Diego boys team, which was ranked third in Division A, took first in region and finished 7-1. They were defeated in first round of state play May 18 by Mountain Ridge 13-4. They finished the season 14-3.
The Soaring Eagle girls lacrosse team finished second in region with 3-1 and 8-6 overall. In the first round of state play, they defeated Jordan 10-11 on May 18 at home. They lost to Riverton 19-7 in the second round on May 21 at Riverton.
Soccer
Juan Diego finished in first place in region 10 with a 14-2 record. They beat Logan 5-0 on May 5 in the second round of state play at home after a first-round bye. They lost to Stansbury 2-1 at home on May 12 in the quarterfinals.
Track and Field
Soaring Eagle athletes made a strong showing at the state track and field meet. The girls team of Ellie Abundo, Natalie Lamb, Malia McConnell, Isabella Pickers, Catherine Stevens and Nyrvanah Crockett finished eighth in the 4x200. In the girls 3200 meter race, Ali Stevens came in 21st. In girls long jump, Isabella Pickers took 10th place, with Catherine Stevens coming in just behind her in 11th place. In the boys 800 competition, Carson Wall came in 12th.
Boys Tennis
Singles players Avmeric Blaizot and Thomas Varghese made it to state play at Liberty Park May 14-15. They were defeated in the first round by Jackson Holman of Desert Hills, 6-0,6-1 and Paul Miller of Logan, 6-0, 6-0. Doubles team Jag Gil-Martin and Dave Kenneberg were also defeated in state play by Korbin Suwyn and Brandon Snow of Dixie, 6-1, 6-2.
JUDGE MEMORIAL CHS
Baseball
The Judge Bulldogs were the Region 13 champs finishing 18-3. At state, they beat North Sanpete 14-6 on May 8 at North Sanpete. They left the Delta Rabbits in the dust 13-3 the same day at Delta. They were defeated by Richfield 9-5 May 13 at Salt Lake Community College.
Girls Golf
The Bulldogs team of Ava Isaac, Brooklyn Wood, Lucy Callahan, Izzy Valles, Tori Locke and Megan Johnson #55 came in third with a score of 141 behind Richfield and Morgan at Mountain View Golf Course May 12-13.
Isaac was named First Team Allstate while Wood and Callahan made it to Second Team Allstate.
On the second day of state play, Senior Tori Locke had her career best round of 89.
With just Locke graduating, “I think we’ll have a really good team again next year and have a good chance to compete to win the state tournament,” coach Jason Nate Olsen said.
Lacrosse
In Division C state play the Judge boys team beat Utah Military Academy-HAFB 14-3 in the first round on May 15 at home. They were defeated by Skyridge 12-11 on May 19 at Skyridge. The Bulldogs finished third in region, 4-4, and 5-9 overall.
The lady Bulldogs defeated Salem Hills 21-3 in the first round of state play on May 15 at home. They lost to Payson May 19 in the second round at Payson 13-7. Judge finished the season 4-8 overall and third in region, 2-4.
Soccer
The Bulldogs beat the Morgan Trojans 1-0 in the state finals May 18 at Rio Tinto stadium (See story in the May 28 Intermountain Catholic).
Track and Field
Annette Rooney finished out a stellar high school career coming in fifth in the Girls 3200 meter and eighth in the 1600 race. Joseph Hill had several solid finishes: fourth in the boys 800, fifth in the 1600 and sixth in the 3200 race. In the 800 event, Zachary Petrogeorge came in 10th and Atticus Richardson came in 14th.
The Bulldogs came in eighth in the boys sprint medley and ninth in the 4x100. The girls also came in ninth in the 4x100.
Tennis (Boys)
The Bulldogs took seven players to the 3A state tournament held May 21-22 at Liberty Park. Henry Poppe was defeated in first round singles by Tyler Saunders of Richfield, 6-1, 7-5; Boden Chell lost to Jack Livingston of Carbon, 6-1, 6-1 and Mark Monette lost to Ferrick Jorgensen of Carbon, 6-0, 6-0.
Maaz Cortez and Yan Chen beat Bryant Shell and Will Jackson of Gunnison Valley 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. They made it to second round but were defeated by Quinten White and Brennan Harvey of Grantsville 6-1, 6-1. The doubles team of Brennan Riad and Rhys Runnels were defeated in the first round by Leonard Livingston and Branden Scovill of Carbon, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
SAINT JOSEPH CHS
Soccer
The Jayhawks took first in region and made it to the state semifinals before being defeated by Waterford. (See story in the May 28 Intermountain Catholic.)
Softball
The Jayhawks came in third in regions, finishing 5-8.
Track & Field
The Jayhawks were the region champs, with Sam Munson taking first in the 200 meters and second in the 100 meter race. They also fielded the winning medley and 4x100 relay teams.
At the state track and field meet May 21-22 at Davis High School, Sarah Snell finished fourth in the javelin. Regan Belko took eighth place in the girls 1600 meter race and 10th in the 800 meter. Caroline Mullin and Julie Rickers came in 12th and 13th respectively in the 3200 meter race.
“We didn’t have a senior and hopefully that bodes well for next year,” coach Joe Loffredo said.
