SALT LAKE CITY — Local Catholics have the opportunity to join parishes throughout the United States in the “Adoration Across the Nation” event on Nov. 20, thanks to an effort by the Salt Lake City Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.
The event “is the brainchild of Deborah Maquire from the Resurrection Council of Catholic Women in Lakeland, Fla.,” said Annette Pressley, president of the Salt Lake DCCW, who learned of it when she attended the National Council of Catholic Women Convention in August.
At the convention, Maquire asked Pressley if Utah would be interested in hosting the Mountain Time Zone “Adoration Across the Nation.”
“I was intrigued and excited,” Pressley said, so she presented the idea to her group in September, “and the rest is history, or will be.”
The premise of “Adoration Across the Nation” is that at 6 p.m. local time on Nov. 20, the CCW affiliate in each time zone will begin an in-person and livestream of their Eucharistic adoration. In Utah this will take place at Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in West Jordan. The other participants will be at Resurrection Catholic Church in Lakeland, Fla.; Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham, Ill.; and Holy Family Catholic Church in Orange, Calif.
“I consider Adoration a time to pray in the real presence of Jesus Christ outside of Mass,” Pressley said, adding that she likes “that there are no rigid rules. I might pray the rosary, read religious meditations, or enjoy a time of prayer, quiet myself, and listen to what Jesus says to me.”
Prayer offers people a time apart from all the noise in the world, she said. “In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, Adoration is a time to be in the Real Presence of Christ in a way that is meaningful to you. We all need time to renew and refresh, and Adoration is a perfect time for that in whatever way speaks to you.”
“Adoration Across the Nation” is an invitation for people in the diocese to add something more to their prayer life, she said. “I pray that this effort will bear much fruit. I pray that this will open some eyes to the power of Adoration and that it will bring at least one person to a deeper and closer relationship with Christ in the Eucharist.”
