SALT LAKE CITY — Bishop Oscar A. Solis has designated five churches across the Diocese of Salt Lake City as pilgrimage sites for this Jubilee Year of Hope. These churches are the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Saint George Catholic Church in St. George, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Orem and Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church in Price. Pilgrims who travel to the sites may want to consider special events or tours taking place at the churches during the Jubilee Year.
The Cathedral of the Madeleine
The Cathedral of the Madeleine serves as the mother church for Catholics in the Diocese of Salt Lake City. Its construction was begun in 1900 and completed in 1909 under the leadership of the Right Rev. Lawrence Scanlan, first Bishop of Salt Lake.
During the extensive renovation and restoration of the cathedral’s interior that took place between 1991 and 1993, changes included renovation of liturgical elements to bring them into conformity with the liturgical reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. These were the construction of a new altar in a more prominent location in the midst of the congregation; a more central location for the bishop’s chair; a separate Blessed Sacrament chapel and a larger baptismal font.
The cathedral is listed on the Utah Register of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places. Tours of the cathedral are often offered on most Sundays. Upcoming tours in English will be offered on Feb. 16 and Feb. 23 at 12:15 p.m. and on March 2 in Spanish at 1:15 p.m.
