William S. Barber

SANDY — William "Bill" S. Barber, 63, died Dec. 24, following complications from intestinal surgery. He was a member of St. Thomas More Parish.

Barber was born Jan. 22, 1944, to Robert and Kathleen Barber. From an early age, others enjoyed his playful personality as he produced theatrical shows and designed spook alleys in the family basement. He graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School. He obtained a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Utah. In the early 1970s he was the technical director for Pioneer Memorial Theater, and taught lighting, makeup, sound, and set design at the University of Utah. He then worked for Walt Disney Enterprises on projects such as Epcot and Tokyo Disneyland. He also did projects for Wet Laboratories the designers of outdoor fountains; Alchemy II, the creators of children’s animated toys such as Teddy Ruxpin and Friends; and Technifex, a special effects company.

Having lived with rheumatoid arthritis since his late 20s, he retrained as a graphic designer in the early 1990s and returned to Salt Lake City. For the last eight years of his life, he worked at Juan Diego Catholic High School and St. John the Baptist Elementary and Middle Schools doing graphic designs and publications, as well as assisting the theater department.

Barber is survived by his sister, Beverly Lords, and her two daughters, Courtney Lords and Jennifer Cockle; nephew-in-law, Jason Cockle; great-nephew, Oliver Cockle; brother, Robert (Robin) Barber, and their daughters, Holly and Nikki; and Seamus, his kitty.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Committal was in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
