by Father James E. Blaine pastor, St. Peter Parish, American Fork Supervising Chaplain Utah State Prison AMERICAN FORK — When Bishop Niederauer asked me to become prison chaplain at the Utah State Prison in 1996, I have to admit, at first I was apprehensive. Although I had been offering Mass at the facility in Cedar City, this assignment would be very different, especially since I would be assuming a position that was newly created – that of supervising chaplain. I thought if I lasted more than one year it would be a miracle. As I write this piece, I have been at the prison for 91/2 years. Much has changed. Many things I could have done when I first arrived, I cannot do now. There have been very difficult times, especially when there were no religious activities for more than two months because of some gang activities. There have also been some great experiences. I can honestly say one reason I have been able to minister at the prison is the strong support of Bishop Niederauer. It is not easy to work at the prison and run a parish at the same time, but with his encouragement and support, it has been easier. Almost every time I see Bishop Niederauer he asks how things are going. He has offered advice to me when needed and was not afraid to caution me about doing too much. He also has provided financial help so I can have missalettes, music issues, and other important items for use at the prison. I know he wanted to come and visit the prison to celebrate Mass, but unfortunately that did not happen. I do not know how much longer I will be at the prison. Even with its challenges, I am enjoying my work there. I am deeply grateful for the support Bishop Niederauer has given me.
