DRAPER — Juan Diego Catholic High School sophomore Samantha Lies traveled with her family to the San Diego airport on Oct. 25 to say goodbye to her brother, Eric Lies, who was boarding a plane that would carry him halfway around the world to a naval base in Bahrain. She will not see him for a full year.

SALT LAKE CITY — Matthew Yost’s orchestral fanfare Ut Sol, Ut Luna was selected as the winner of the Catholic University of America’s 50th Anniversary competition. The piece will be premiered by the CUA’s symphony orchestra as the concert opener at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on April 12.

SALT LAKE CITY — Judge Memorial Catholic High School has been named a PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Lab for the 2014-15 school year. About 80 schools nationwide have been selected for the NewsHour program, including two other Utah schools, Brighton High School and Entrada High Draper Campus.

We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe. Recuerdo Celebración, y Esperanza: Latinos in Utah has been a dozen years in the making. Armando Solórzano, who holds joint faculty appointments at the University of Utah in ethnic studies and family and consumer studies, is director of Chicano Studies at the university, as well as being a permanent deacon at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. More than just a book of research – although its research is very impressive – this is the author’s own story, for he himself grew up in very humble circumstances as a member of a Mexican agricultural family.
