Simbang Gabi — The 2014 Simbang Gabi (Filipino traditional Advent novena of Masses) begins Dec. 15 at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish; the other participating parishes are Our Lady of Guadalupe, SLC, Dec. 16; Saint John the Baptist, Dec. 17; Saint Patrick, Dec. 18; Saint Mary, West Haven, Dec. 19; Saint. Lawrence, Dec. 20; Saint Thomas Aquinas, Dec. 21; Saint Martin de Porres, Dec. 22; and Saint Thomas More, Dec. 23. All the Masses begin at 7 p.m. except the one on Dec. 21, which begins at 5 p.m. All are invited.

As we Americans prepare to celebrate a national day of thanksgiving, the image of immigrants huddled in the shadows comes to my mind. For most of them there will be no table laden with turkey and ham, potatoes and pies. Indeed, many of them will labor on that day at jobs we in the mainstream tend to scorn – making beds in hotels, washing dishes in restaurants, picking vegetables in fields – backbreaking work for which they receive wages so scanty that their meager meals have no resemblance to the Thanksgiving feasts we see others enjoy.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Judge Memorial Catholic High School football team capped their 2014 season with a 3A UHSAA State Championship title after a 63-14 defeat of Juab High School in Cedar City. The record-setting gamed marked a back-to-back championship for Judge Memorial, a feat that hasn’t been done since the Bulldogs did so in 1972 and 1973.
