Recently, I completed a 30-day Ignatian retreat in Los Angeles (I hope you are all impressed!). The Miraculous Medal was a gift to the Catholic Church in 1830 by Saint Catherine Laboure, a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, who claimed to have received it in a Marian apparition.  The medal is characteristically (but not always) oval in shape. On the face side is an image of Mary with her arms outstretched and the words, “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” On the back are the letter M, a cross, 12 stars, and the hearts of Mary and Jesus. It is a very popular devotion in the Church, and many miracles have been attributed to it: thus its name. It also has an interesting place in Utah Catholic history. >>>
