They are children. What gets lost in all of the emotion and polemic about the laws broken by the unaccompanied minors being detained at the U.S./Mexico border is the fact that we are talking about children: all of them under the age of 18, some of them as young as 5; frightened, alone, away from home and now part of a political debate that focuses on the law rather than on these children.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, will celebrate the annual Misan Bayan Filipino Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Aug. 3, and the Diocese of Salt Lake City is invited. The tradition for the bishop’s Mass for the Filipino community began about 10 years ago with Bishop George Niederauer, now retired Archbishop of San Francisco.

SALT LAKE CITY — Misang Bayan, the Filipino community of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, hosts six traditional events a year to share their cultural heritage with Catholics and the community at large to foster and keep the traditions of the Philippines alive in Utah.
Misang Bayan was formed 16 years ago so the Filipino community could meet for a monthly bilingual Mass in English and Tagalog, the native language of the Philippines. The Filipino Mass is celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Salt Lake City on the first Sunday of each month at 3:30 p.m. A potluck of traditional Filipino food follows.
