Bishop Wester comments on HHS lawsuits

On Monday, May 21, 43 Catholic entities filed 12 separate lawsuits against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, among other defendants, and the HHS rule requiring employers to provide prescription contraception coverage with an extremely narrow exemption for houses of worship. Over the next few weeks, more information will be provided about the suits, but Catholics should understand two important points from the beginning.

HURRICANE — Saint Paul Mission began as a group of about 20 Catholics who rented the American Legion Hall in Hurricane for Eucharistic services. Six years ago they opened a thrift store to begin funding a church. In 2009, they turned a former office building into a gathering space, with a corner for the thrift store.

SALT LAKE CITY — As part of Salt Lake County Operations for National Public Works week in May, Saint Vincent de Paul students participated in a snowplow painting contest. The county dropped off the snowplow blade in front of the school on a Monday. Students then had two weeks to come up with a design, paint it and submit their entry.

Catholic students awarded Comcast scholarships

Julia Colosimo of Juan Diego Catholic High School and Gabrielle Regenhardt of Judge Memorial Catholic High School were among the 35 recipients of the 2012 Leaders and Achievers Scholarships from the Comcast Foundation. The scholarships were presented May 16 at the Utah State Capitol Rotunda. Ten of the students also were given netbook computers for college.
