Funds raised by the Knights of Columbus will help pay to educate seminarians who will serve in the military as chaplains, and then return to serve as priests in their home diocese. The military estimates that 800 Catholic chaplains are needed to properly serve the needs of soldiers. Currently, fewer than 220 Catholic chaplains serve, meaning that some soldiers go 14 weeks between Masses. The Knights raised almost $1,000 April 21 in an effort that Bishop Wester called "a most important and worthy endeavor," Dover said.
