Whenever the Catholic Church takes a public stand on a seemingly political issue, such as immigration, some individuals may ask, "Why is a church involved in a political debate?" Thomas Jefferson’s concept of separation of church and state does not mean that churches have no place in state affairs. In fact, both the Utah and United States’ constitutions guarantee churches, among others, the right to speak on matters of moral and public concern.
