Man rescues family from fire, is viewed as a hero

SALT LAKE CITY — Rick Gallegos is a hero. He alerted a grandmother and her three grandchildren their house was on fire and proceeded to get them to safety. Gallegos is a member of Saint Patrick Parish.

SALT LAKE CITY — The summer months are a busy time for Aden Batar and the staff of the Refugee Resettlement Office at Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS). "It’s the last quarter of the federal fiscal year," Batar told the Intermountain Catholic. "And all the people who have been waiting to be resettled end up coming at this time. We have asked the federal government to spread out the arrivals, but that just isn’t happening. Fifty percent of our arrivals come during the last quarter."

SALT LAKE CITY— If you like to read and have a good voice for it, the Utah State Library needs you. Not to be confused with the Public Library, the Utah State Library is a library for people with special needs, said Donna Jones Morris, state librarian and division director. "We’re not in competition with the other libraries. In fact, we have a back-up collection of books the public libraries have access to if they need them. We provide services for people who are blind or otherwise disabled – perhaps they can’t hold a book or turn a page. We offer audio tapes, and we are soon moving to digital books."

SALT LAKE CITY — The first photo you see on the title pages of "Historic Photos of Salt Lake City" by Jeff Burbank, is a circa 1950 photo taken from the apex of the City and County Building at 451 South State Street. It has many familiar buildings that are still standing today and a number of older buildings that are gone now. The photo is symbolic of what the book is about. It’s a collection of photos that capture a certain place at a certain time. And even though the book has photos taken between 1887 and 1963, as a reader I still kept scanning the photos – looking for someone I knew. I didn’t find any faces familiar to me, but there are those who will.
