Bishop Richard Hanifen reflects on our mother church

SALT LAKE CITY — To understand the full significance of any cathedral, and specifically the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Cathedral of the Madeleine, Retired Bishop Richard Hanifen of Colorado Springs said one must understand the Catholic Church’s belief in the succession of the apostles as the shepherds of the Catholic Church.

Helper bids fond farewell to Chuck's Pharmacy

HELPER — The aisles of Chuck’s Pharmacy, a Helper institution for 45 years, are lines with well packed cardboard boxes. All of the merchandise, from over-the-counter medications to cosmetics to housewares have either been sold at a deep discount, donated to one of Helper’s civic organizations, or are on the list as prizes for the annual St. Anthony of Padua Parish festival.

Newman Center offers formation in prayer for healing

SALT LAKE CITY — St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center and Parish will begin its popular "Spiritual Formation Program in Prayer for Healing" (FHM) beginning with a retreat Sept. 9-10. Weekly meetings will then be conducted Tuesday evenings over a two-year period. Penny Lazalde and David Hughes will teach the formation program, an in-depth ecumenical training program.

Habitat Bicycle Challenge comes to St. Pius X Parish

MOAB — St. Pius X Parish, Moab, hosted 27 riders and their support crew for the annual Habitat Bicycle Challenge July 13-14. The riders began their 4,000 mile adventure in May in New Haven, Conn., and will finish in San Francisco, Calif., the end of July.

SALT LAKE CITY — Deacon Douglas Sliger, 78, died July 19 in Seattle from complications of a head injury suffered while fishing with his son in Alaska. Most recently serving at Christ Prince of Peace Chapel at Hill Air Force Base, Deacon Sliger leaves behind a long list of appointments and accomplishments in the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY — "The importance of the Cathedral of the Madeleine to the Diocese of Salt Lake City transcends the diocese’s individual bishops, said Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald, diocesan administrator. "By calling this annual event the Bishop’s Dinner, we are using the office of the bishop to show the importance and the value of the Cathedral in the life of the Catholic Church in Utah. The Cathedral of the Madeleine is the mother church of the diocese, and we all bear a responsibility for the care and maintenance of this wonderful cathedral, one of the finest cathedrals in the west."
