OGDEN — A. Phillip Rubino, our father, grandfather and friend died July 24, 2016, surrounded by his family, who admired, respected and loved him dearly.
Phil was born on Feb. 9, 1927 in Boston, Mass. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Army. When he was stationed in Austria, he met and married the love of his life, Elisabeth Shauer, in July of 1947. They traveled through Europe and the United States, settling in Utah. Phil and Lisa brought three children into this world: Gloria, Steven and Marc.
After serving 26 years in the military, which included tours of European duty, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam, Phil received the Bronze Star, Army Commendation and Joint Services Commendation medals. He retired as a sergeant major in 1971. Being assigned to the Defense Depot in Ogden, he and Lisa decided to remain in Ogden after his military service because they loved the area. Phil was then employed by the Internal Revenue Service and Hill Air Force Base.
During his leisure time, Phil became an avid golfer, spending his time at the Ben Lomond Golf Course and was a member of the Utah Senior Golf Association.
Phil is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lisa; daughter Gloria (Craig), son Marc (Tammy); 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Phil’s son, Steven, preceded him in death in 2012.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. James the Just Catholic Church. The Rubino family would like to express their gratitude to Legacy Health and Hospice Care, especially Bonnie, who always made Phil smile.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Primary Children’s Hospital in Phillip Rubino’s name. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com.
