Turkeys wanted — Catholic Community Services is beginning its holiday food distribution for 1,500 families in northern Utah. The holiday turkey drive is in need of 900 more turkeys to meet its goal. Other items such as hams and non-perishable food items also are requested. Cash donations also accepted. Donations may be dropped off at the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank, 2504 F. Ave., Ogden (weekdays, 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m.); or United Way of Northern Utah, 2955 Harrison Blvd. (weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.) 

Vocation Awareness Night — Monday, Nov. 21, 7-8:15 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 4050 South 3900 West, West Haven. Six religious men and women from the Diocese of Salt Lake City will discuss their vocations and answer questions. Free and open to the public. For information, call 801-898-3821. 

Thanksgiving Holiday — The Diocese of Salt Lake City Pastoral Center will close at noon Wednesday, Nov. 23 and remained closed through the weekend, reopening at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28. Happy Thanksgiving!

First Sunday of Advent — Sunday, Nov. 27. 

Class on Catholic Dogma — Patience Kabamba, an anthropology professor at Utah Valley University, is offering a series of classes on the role of dogma in the Catholic faith. The one-hour classes will continue Nov. 28, 7 p.m. the Dominguez Room of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church’s classroom building, 65 East 500 North, Orem. Free and open to the public.

First Friday Mass — followed by the rosary. Friday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m. at Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Parish, 1624 W. Lennox St., Midvale. Organized by the Catholic Woman’s League. Holiday Boutique — Friday, Dec. 2, 5-8 p.m.; and Saturday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 E. Creek Road, Sandy. More than 60 local crafters; sponsored by the Ladies of St. Thomas More Parish. 

Diocesan Advent Retreat — Saturday, Dec. 3, 9-noon at St. John the Baptist Parish, 300 East 11800 South, Draper. The bilingual retreat will be presented by Fr. Gustavo Vidal, pastor of St. Mary Parish. Cost: $5 by Nov. 28; $8 at the door. “The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass” — Saturday, Dec. 10, 7-8 p.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 7405 S. Redwood Road, West Jordan. Lisa Bachiller, a certified lay ecclesial minister for the Diocese of Salt Lake City, will present. All are invited to this retreat to help prepare for the pinnacle of Advent. No cost.

St. Catherine of Siena portrayal — by Adrian Dominican Sr. Nancy Murray, who is renowned for her one-woman performance of the saint’s life. Sandy Hook Vigil — to honor all victims of gun violence. Sunday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 Foothill Dr., SLC. Interfaith event sponsored by the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah. All are welcome.

CCS St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen — is seeking donations to pay for waste disposal; each dumpster dump $65. Send tax-deductible donations to CCS, 437 West 200 South, SLC, UT 84101. Make the check or money order out to Catholic Community Services; memo: Waste Disposal by Republic Services.
 
Scouting Religious Emblems — Now is the time for all Scouts to begin work on and complete the appropriate Scout-related Religious Emblem. Information for Venture Crews, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts religious emblems is available at nccs-bsa.org.  Girl Scouts, refer to nccgscf.org. Application deadline is Dec. 21 so the emblems and certificates can be ordered in time for Scout Saturday, which will be held at the Cathedral of the Madeleine next year.
