Benedictine Sr. Mary (Sebastine) Schneider

Benedictine Sister Mary (Sebastine) Schneider died April 21, 2014 at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, Minn. She was 93.

Mary Schneider was born Feb. 27, 1921, to George and Mary (Strecker) Schneider in St. Paul, Minn. She attended St. Bernard’s grade school and St. Joseph Academy in St. Paul, Minn., then received a bachelor’s degree in business education and a minor in philosophy from the College of Saint Benedict. She also studied accounting at the University of Minnesota and received a diploma in medical records library science from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn.

On Sept. 15, 1944, she entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery; was received into the novitiate on June 21, 1945; made first monastic profession July 11, 1946; and perpetual monastic profession July 11, 1949.

Sr. Mary’s expertise in medical records formed the basis of her ministry for many years. She served as medical record librarian at St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden, Utah, and at St. Cloud Hospital from 1951-1980 as medical record administrator. In 1980, Sr. Mary moved to Saint Benedict’s Monastery, where she served as community secretary and held a number of positions that required secretarial skills, including writing memorial cards for deceased sisters and managing memorabilia for the community.

She is survived by her Benedictine community; one brother, Robert; a sister, Margaret Schoen; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Jerome and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph. Burial was in the monastery cemetery.
