ST. GEORGE — Bright colors are usually used to attract attention but in St. George Catholic Church they are a sign of joy.

The stairway project has resulted in all three levels of the handrails and the walls painted with bright colors.

"Four years ago when we did a vacation Bible school there were some very bright colors in a poster and I kept it because I wanted to use those colors," said Jill Luttrell, the parish’s religious education director.

Father Oscar Martin Picos, pastor, told Luttrell that he liked the idea of the project but first they needed to find the funds for it.

So they did.

"The money was donated. We now have 10 walls … so we have 10 different colors; we have red, yellow, orange, purple and blue and lime green and all these different vibrant colors," said Luttrell.

After receiving the funding, the next step for Luttrell was to send an email to all the parents of the parish asking for a different kind of help.

"I asked if their families had a favorite Bible verse that they wanted to share," said Luttrell. "We took those Bible verses and picked through them because I wanted a big variety from the Old Testament and the New Testament."

Once the verses were chosen, the words were taken to a vinyl store to be printed on a special material with an adhesive backing.

"After the walls were painted we peeled the Bible verses [and put them] on each wall and when the kids came the first Sunday they loved it. They were very excited. They just loved it and were surprised because the colors are so bright after having just bare walls," said Luttrell.

The purpose of the project was to help the kids as well as adults learn the verses.

"When they first come in the very first one is, ‘This is the day the Lord has made rejoice and be glad,’ and when they leave is, ‘When two or three are gathered in my name I am in the midst of them,’ so when they leave I want them to know they have been with Christ," said Luttrell.
