Sister Peter Marie of Jesus Crucified professed her solemn vows as a Discalced Carmelite on Oct. 1 at the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Holladay, which she entered in 2010.
Before coming to Utah she explored various religious orders. Originally she didn’t consider entering a cloister, but as she visited different communities she felt called to more a more contemplative life, and “when I came here, it just felt like home,” she said.
After six years of preparation, she celebrated the ceremony in which she donned a black veil, indicating that she has professed solemn vows.
“I am still learning to give myself over to him with trustful surrender and in faith,” she said later in an interview.
Sr. Peter Marie immigrated to Texas from Vietnam when she was 6 years old. Before entering religious life she attended college, intending to go into a financial field.
Now, as a Discalced Carmelite, much of her day is spent in prayer. The nuns also bake altar breads.
Most of her family, including her parents, brothers, sisters and nieces and nephews, came from Texas for the Mass at which she professed her solemn vows. Although she won’t be able to see her family often, she said she is content that they are safe and happy.
“It’s a great privilege for the Lord to call me into his service and his life,” she said. “I’m going to be his for life.”
