On May 25, Father Eleazar Silva and I flew down to St. George Parish to celebrate the funeral Mass of Deacon Jack O'Brien. Deacon Jack suffered greatly over the past years from Parkinson's disease and yet he carried his cross with great courage, patience and heroism. His wonderful wife, Rita, as well as his many relatives and friends, were huge support to him, particularly in his final days. Deacon Jack worked tirelessly in southern Utah, building up the Catholic faith and serving the Catholic people of the region. He drove countless thousands of miles serving the missions of the area, as well as his legendary service of St. George Parish. Deacon Jack was a real symbol of God's fidelity and his ministry represented God's fidelity as he carried out his duties for over 30 years. We will all miss Deacon Jack and we pray for him and his wonderful family, especially Rita, in the months and years ahead.
