Dinner with deacons' wives

By The Most Rev. John C. Wester
Bishop of Salt Lake City

Last Thursday night I had the opportunity to join the wives of many of our permanent deacons for a lovely dinner at my residence. There was no agenda, there were no speeches and no awards were given. Rather, we simply gathered to get to know each other better. In addition, I had the opportunity to express my appreciation to them for all that they do in our diocese. As you may know, our permanent deacons spend approximately four years in formation and study in preparation for their ordination. Their wives accompany them on this journey and they also support them throughout their ministry in our local Church. In this way, the wives of our permanent deacons have a profound influence in our Church and beyond. In addition, many of them are engaged in their own form of ministry as they serve the needs of the poor, function as Eucharistic ministers and lectors, engage in catechetical instruction, visit the homebound and perform a host of other activities for the good of our faith community. I hope to have more of these dinners in the future so that I can express my gratitude and the gratitude of a grateful diocese for these wonderful women.
