October 8, 1937 ~ August 16, 2022

Elizabeth J. McDonough passed away on August 16, 2022, in her home surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren.

Betty was born on October 8, 1937, in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Jeanette and Ross Artese. After moving several times in childhood, the family settled in Salt Lake City, where she met and married John V. (Jack) McDonough. She spent much of her early married years committed to the success of Democratic party politics re-election nationally and locally. She was a devout Catholic throughout her life, specifically assisting and running different volunteer programs at Saint Vincent de Paul’s parochial school and parish. Through her activism and passions, she instilled those commitments to volunteerism in her daughters and grandchildren. Betty was an accomplished cook who loved to prepare Italian food, at least until she learned Jack’s preferred home-cooked Italian dinner was compliments of the culinary stylings of Chef Boyardee.

Jack and Betty were blessed with six daughters: Lynn Anne (Doug), Shannon, Mikell, Margaret, Anita and Jacqueline and nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Marie. She was preceded in death by her spouse Jack, her daughter Anita and granddaughter Jennifer, brother Ross and two sons-in-law Bob and Herb.

A special thanks for the daily, loving care provided by daughter Jackie, grandson J.J. and the caring times shared with her other daughters over the past several months. The comfort of Foo and other beloved animals in her life was greatly enjoyed. Also, thanks go out to Hospice Services for the care, kindness and support provided to our mother over the last several weeks. We thank you for the condolences you have sent and the prayers you have offered for the repose of her soul.

A vigil and rosary will be held August 25 at 6 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on August 26 at 11 a.m. at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 E. Spring Lane, Salt Lake City. She will be laid to rest in a private family service at Mt. Cavalry Catholic Cemetery.
