SALT LAKE CITY — Determined to strike a balance between rigorous in-person and online education with a responsible COVID-19 safety protocol, Judge Memorial Catholic High School is being lauded by parents for its successful reopening with the student body pared into two groups for social distancing.
The creative model allows half the students in the building on designated days, alternating between in-person learning and distance learning with courses livestreamed to students’ homes.
“I have seen a huge improvement in Lanee’s attitude and outlook on life in just two days of being back,” Judge parent Sarah Farr wrote the admissions director. “Thank you for working so hard to make this a possibility. I can’t imagine the amount of work that has gone into a safe return to school. I am grateful.”
Since last spring, Judge maintenance crews have worked around the clock on sanitation, plexiglass protection for faculty and staff, directional signage and socially distanced classroom setups. Sanitizer and wipes are stocked in every room, and multiple spots across campus have been designated as outdoor classrooms.
Students are required to submit an online wellness check each morning before school, while on-site temperature checks may also be performed. Multiple high-quality Judge-branded masks were distributed to every student, and teachers were equipped with new technology to livestream and record courses via Zoom.
“Because of our size and dedicated faculty, we are in a sweet spot to do this right,” said Principal Patrick Lambert. “Safety is our number one priority while innovating to offer our students an academically rigorous learning environment.”
This year, Judge Memorial began offering trial enrollment through Sept. 4 so any family can experience #JudgePride. Rolling enrollment will continue to be open through late fall, but Judge has already welcomed transfer students.
Throughout the COVID-19 quarantine last spring, Judge Memorial maintained 100 percent student participation in distance learning, with 90-plus percent parent satisfaction.
