OREM — Knights of Columbus Escalante Council 1136 has shared the history of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish for more than 100 years. When the parish moved from Provo to Orem almost a dozen years ago, Mass was celebrated in the Parish Center gymnasium because construction of a new church wasn’t possible at the time. However, the Knights donated all the paint and labor to paint the parish activity center, and also contributed $20,000, resulting in a total contribution of more than $30,000 to the new facility. In addition, during the next 10 years, the Knights sponsored many building fund projects for the new church, which was dedicated Feb. 19. The two large stained glass windows on either side of the main altar of the new church were donated by Escalante Council 1136, a $45,000 contribution. The windows were designed by David Gavichli of the Rambusch Company in New Jersey. The window on the left side depicts the triumphal procession of Jesus into Jerusalem with his followers waving olive branches. The window on the right side of the altar is an unusual but effective portrayal of the Last Supper in which the orientation is vertical rather than horizontal. Shown are St. Francis of Assisi pastor Father David Bittmenn with members of the Knights Council 1136 at the main altar of the new church.
