Springtime at The Madeleine Choir School brings beautiful pink and white blossoms blanketing the campus, and last spring was no different. However, the dedication of the renovated Jacquelyn M. Erbin Hall also brought the opening of the L. S. Skaggs Library.   With space at a premium during the renovation period, the library on the historic Avenues campus was temporarily converted into classrooms.  When the library doors reopened in the new space, nobody was quite expecting what came next.

“I was amazed to see how many students were lining up at recess every day to check out a new book,” said Jennifer Foy, MCS librarian. “Then they would just find a quiet corner to immerse themselves into their selection.”

As Mrs. Foy began to organize and fill the shelves with books that had been stored in moving boxes during the renovation period, she continued to see large groups of students pounding on the door of the library when recess time rolled around.

“Usually, we would expect a few students each day, but some days I have a dozen or two students at a time. It was obvious from the beginning we would to need to significantly enhance our reading lounge,” Foy said with a laugh.

The one-year anniversary of the reopening is quickly approaching in March, and the “recess rush” at the L. S. Skaggs Library only continues to grow as the students have taken their culture of knowledge to a new level on the Choir School campus.

Additionally, we are happy to report that several comfortable reading chairs have mysteriously appeared and are undoubtedly reinforcing this behavior.
