DRAPER — Jeff Tack, Juan Diego Catholic High School’s lacrosse assistant coach, was voted as Assistant Coach of the Year by his peers following Juan Diego’s state championship game May 19. He received the award for his dedication to the sport, the youth and the community.

Tack started coaching lacrosse 10 years ago at Saint John the Baptist Elementary School. He followed his two sons to the middle school, then to Juan Diego, where he has coached for the past six years.

"Jeff has a great influence on the boys," said Patrick Lambert, Juan Diego lacrosse coach. "He is an incredible family man; his daughter plays lacrosse at the high school and his son plays at Westminster College. He stayed on to coach after his sons graduated. He has learned the game of lacrosse over the years and brings a great amount of professionalism to practice and is someone the boys can rely on."

Tack coaches for the enjoyment of spending time with the team, he said. "I enjoy helping them with everything, being on the field with them and watching them grow and mature," said Tack, adding that he wants to do whatever he can to give back to the community. "By the time they’re in high school they know how to play lacrosse. We teach them how to respect other players, the team and the game. We all like to win and I am as competitive as anybody; I coach the boys to win. But at the end of the day they have to ask themselves, win or lose, if they had fun and played their best."

The state championship was a great accomplishment for the boys who have been playing since they were in kindergarten, said Tack. "It’s all about the parents’ involvement, those who have been bringing their kids to the practices since little league games. I tell the boys to go home and thank your parents because without them you wouldn’t be where you are today."
