Mary K. Shiramizu

OGDEN — Mary Mitsuko Kawachi Shiramizu, 84, died April 14. She was a member of Holy Family Parish.

Shiramizu was born Dec. 20, 1924, inNarimatsu, Hyogo-Pref., Japan to Tokiichi and Taki Kitagawa Kawachi. She grew up in Japan and graduated in 1956, with a B.A. degree from Nanzan University (Catholic University of Nagoya). She married Yaneo Shiramizu May 30, 1957, whom she met in 1953 while in Korea. They exchanged vows at the U.S. Embassy and at the Tajimi Catholic Church. They settled in Clearfield and later in south Ogden.

She was employed at St. Benedict’s Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital from 1958 until she retired in 1991. After her retirement, she volunteered at Birthright and Ogden Regional Medical Center. She was an active member of Holy Family Parish and never missed a Sunday Mass. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic High School Booster Club, and was on the financial board as a representative from Saint Rose of Lima Parish. She was a member of the Association of the University Women’s Club. She loved music, which inspired her to play the koto and the piano.

She is survived by her husband, Yoneo; two sons, Paul (Patricia) Shiramizu, Salt Lake City, and David (Melissa) Shiramizu, Georgetown, Texa; and five grandchildren, Rachel, Daniel, Matthew, Claire, and Jonah; brother, Kenji (Masako) Kawachi; and sister Mihoko Komori, both of Japan.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment was in Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch.
