Msgr. James Terence Kenny dies

SALT LAKE CITY — Msgr. James Terence Kenny died May 31, on Pentecost in Salt Lake City at the age of 89.

Msgr. Kenny was a resident of CHRISTUS Saint Joseph Villa. He is survived by his brother Phil Kenny of Ogden, as well as other relatives and many friends.

Msgr. Kenny was born in Ogden, Utah, Nov. 28, 1919, to Terence and Nellie Frost Kenny. He attended Catholic schools in Ogden. He completed theological studies at Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif., and was ordained a Catholic priest at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Ogden on June 17, 1945. In 1988, he was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor.

After assisting in various parishes, Msgr. Kenny was assigned as an instructor at Judge Memorial Catholic High School, where he became chief administrator and orchestrated construction of the present academic building. He served as pastor of the following parishes: Saint Olaf, Bountiful; Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, Midvale; Saint Ann, Salt Lake City; and Our Lady of Lourdes, Salt Lake City. He served as Superintendent of Catholic Schools and chaplain at Saint Benedict Hospital in Ogden, which later was named Ogden Regional Medical Center.

For many years, Msgr. Kenny served as diocesan director for Catholic scouting and was recognized nationally for his service to the scouting program. He retired in 1994, and resided at CHRISTUS Saint Joseph Villa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Villa Charity Fund.

A vigil service for Msgr. Kenny will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at Saint Ann Church, located at 450 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 East South Temple, Salt Lake City. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 275 U Street, Salt Lake City.
