Ordination of 21 Permanent Deacons

It was a great day for our diocese on Saturday, Jan. 23, when 21 men were ordained to the diaconate. They and their wives were full of smiles as were we all on this happy day, a day that capped more than four years of study, prayer and service. Every other Saturday the new deacons and their wives gathered to study theology, spirituality, liturgy, preaching, Scripture, ethics, Church history and many other topics in their preparation for ordination. This was quite a commitment, considering that they also have full-time jobs to attend to, families to run and lives to lead. Yet, they found the time and enjoyed themselves in the process.

I was particularly pleased that I could give the deacons and their wives their ordination retreat several months ago. It was a wonderful experience for me as we gathered at the Homestead Resort in Midway for several days. I could see right away that we were blessed with truly dedicated and spiritual candidates who would serve our local church with distinction. The retreat also afforded me an opportunity to get to know the deacons a little bit better, as well as their wives.

 It has always impressed me that almost all of the wives participate fully in the formation program. In addition, they are all very supportive throughout the individual deacon’s ministry. I am sure that many homilies are improved by the wise editorial comments of the deacon’s spouse. It is wonderful to see how the couples and their families deepen in their love for each other as a result of the deacon’s ministry. Christ is truly working in their lives on many levels. 

Many of the “veteran” deacons were also on hand at the ordination as well as quite a few priests. They all looked a bit relieved as they saw “reinforcements” on the way! I am grateful to all my brother priests and deacons who are so selfless in giving of themselves for all of us in this great diocese.

I am particularly grateful to Sister Patricia Riley, CSC, who led the formation program and became a real support to all the deacons and their wives. Her order has transferred her to California, where she will work with the retired sisters of the Holy Cross. She will be greatly missed in the diocese and we wish her well in her new ministry. We hope you return often to visit, Sister Patty – this is always your home!
