Winning Headlines! Wyatt Haines, news editor for Juan Diego Catholic High School’s Speaking Eagle, won first place in the News Story category of the Deseret News Newspaper Training and Awards conference at Utah Valley University for his front-page news story "There’s no more free lunch."

Other award winners were:

Honorable Mention

– junior Kim Brenneisen for her profile on JD linebacker Dakota Cox;

3rd Place

– junior Megan Tigue for her story on the JD girls basketball season;

2nd Place

– senior Kelsey Watnes for her sports profile on Emily Bruder and the JD soccer team.

Feeling the Blues! Emme Nelson, a senior at Judge Memorial CHS; and Connor McCoy, a junior at Judge Memorial CHS, were selected as outstanding soloists at the SLCC Jazz Festival.

Sharp Skates, Sharp Minds! The Judge Memorial CHS 2012-2013 hockey team had 11 members qualify for Academic All-Star honors. They were seniors Kane Dodson, Charlie Howard, Jack Keller, Brian Kestle, Alex Leopardi, Jeremy Longe and Marshall Wallace; sophomores Andrew Aubry and Duncan Hickman; and freshmen Douglas Gosselin and Ben Keller.

It’s a Draw! Juan Diego CHS played Saint Joseph CHS starting with prayer in the center of the Soaring Eagle Stadium. The Game ended in double overtime 0-0 tie. Complicating loyalties: JD Coach Scott Platz is a graduate of St. Joseph CHS.

Creative Forces! Blessed Sacrament 7th grade students Gigi Gist and Victoria Martin were awarded Silver Key and Honorable Mentions for their photography submissions to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest. Gist was awarded the Silver Key and two Honorable Mentions; Victoria Martin was awarded one Honorable Mention.
