Last Thursday, the bishops of the San Francisco Province met at the residence of Archbishop George Niederauer for our semiannual meeting. There were 15 bishops in attendance at the meeting, coming from Hawaii, Nevada, Utah and northern California. Archbishop Niederauer, as you know, is recuperating from heart surgery and he looks really good. He is still a bit tired, needing more time for convalescence, but everything is on track and it was good to see him up and around. He asked me to extend to each of you in our diocese his gratitude for your prayers and best wishes.
(For those who may not know, all dioceses are organized into what is called a Province. The mother church of the province is called an archdiocese and in our case, this is the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Archbishop is known as the Metropolitan, who calls the bishops of the province together for regular meetings. Although each diocesan bishop is autonomous, the Archbishop serves as the leader of the province, who directs our meetings and fulfills certain canonical responsibilities. As we here in Utah know, we could not have a better Metropolitan than Archbishop Niederauer!)
