LAYTON — “This week offered a powerful and unique opportunity for sharing Jesus Christ to our children, volunteers and catechists,” Father Clarence Sandoval, pastor of Saint Rose of Lima, said about the parish’s inaugural vacation Bible school. “Every time I entered our Education Center I felt a love, joy and God’s spirit in the volunteers, adults and especially our children.”
The week-long event focused on the topic of “The Marvelous Mystery – The Mass Comes Alive,” and included lessons, crafts, snacks and music for children from ages 4 to 12. Each day focused on a different aspect of the Mass, such as the fact that the Eucharistic celebration is a shared meal, and that the Mass is a call to say “yes” to Jesus. Every lesson was paired with a virtue, such as peace or unity, and included teaching about a saint who exemplified that virtue.
Parish volunteer Jill Steven led the effort to organize and supervise the VBS, helped by approximately two dozen parish volunteers, including youth, young adults and many of the parents of the participants.
“I enjoyed leading a great group of volunteers and children participants in Vacation Bible School,” Steven said. “It was a joy to see the kids learn more about the Mass and see their faith grow.”
Nearly 60 students participated in the program, which helped the children grow in their faith.
“To witness my children gather and unite as one with other children of all ages to listen and learn more about our ever-so-loving and giving God is truly a marvelous blessing,” said parent volunteer Jayna Bamba.
Fr. Sandoval echoed her sentiments. “I saw the transformation of our children from strangers with one another to forming a small community,” he said. “Indeed, the Spirit was very present. Thanks to all the volunteers for helping out and thanks to all the parents who entrusted their children to us! A special thanks to Jill Stevens for her guidance. Thanks be to God!”
