Last week was rich in cultural traditions! In addition to Las Posadas, I was also privileged to celebrate, in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, the first of nine Simbang Gabi Masses scheduled throughout the diocese. This rich Filipino tradition dates back to over 400 years ago when the Franciscan Friars in the Philippines provided Mass for the farmers before they went out for their daily chores. These nine Masses were intended to help the farmers prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas. These days, the Simbang Gabi novena can be celebrated in the early evening to accommodate those who work during the day and whose custom does not include getting up before sunrise! Regardless of the time, it is a wonderful opportunity to pray for God's grace that we will be ready to receive the Christ child this coming Christmas. After the Mass there is a reception complete with delicious Filipino foods. This provides the participants an opportunity to deepen the bonds that unite them. At the end of the Mass, I passed a beautiful lantern that symbolized the star of Bethlehem on to a representative of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, where the next Simbang Gabi was to be held. As word of this rich tradition spreads through the diocese, I hope more of our faithful will avail themselves of this wonderful tradition.
