Sister Fabian Uriot

GARRISON. N.Y. — Sister Fabian Uriot, a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement, died on April 21, 2011 at Graymoor, Garrison, N.Y. She was 86 .

Glenda Uriot was born May 29, 1925 in Boston, Mass. to Frederick and Mary E. Fennelly, one of five children. Her father died when she was 3. In high school she loved basketball, both as a player and as a spectator.

Although she had, from time to time, considered a religious life, after high school she worked for several years for the phone company. However, as a young woman she volunteered to help raise money for a summer camp run by the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement and was impressed by their work.

On Sept. 8, 1953, she moved to the Mother House at Graymoor, in Garrison, N.Y. April 30, 1954 was her "Clothing Day," when she received her sister’s clothing, including a white veil. On May 1, 1955 she made the first her five professions; She professed her final vows in 1962.

As an Atonement missionary, she served in catechetical and pastoral ministry in Cobleskill, N.Y.; Alamosa, Colo.; Mechanicville, N.Y.; Bakersfield, Calif.; Lindsay, Calif.; Canajoharie, N.Y.; Cadyville, N.Y.; Schuylerville, N.Y.; Hamden, Conn.;, Lincoln, N.H.; North Conway, N.H.; Brushton, N.Y.; West Jordan, Utah and the residence at Graymoor.

Sr. Fabian completed a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education and Psychology at Notre Dame College in Manchester, N.H.

In September 1982, she was assigned to St. Joseph the Worker Parish in West Jordan, moving in the first year the convent building opened. Her first job was a parish census; she then got involved with the religious education program, a job she continued for several generations of children. For her 27 years of service, the parish honored her by naming the social hall Sister Fabian Hall.

"Sister Fabian has shown us by her example how to live the values of our patron Saint Joseph the Worker," states the parish’s website. "She has been hard working, faithful, dedicated and kind – not for personal glory or gain but to serve others."

Sister Fabian is survived by her nieces and nephews.

A wake service was held in the Motherhouse Chapel on April 26; the Liturgy of Christian Burial was in the Motherhouse Chapel on April 27. Burial followed in the Sisters’ Cemetery, Graymoor.
