Juan Diego’s debate team had an exceptional showing at the Utah Round Robin two weeks ago. The top 16 teams in each debate event descended on Bingham High School to compete against each other. Juan Diego advanced to the final championship round in all three events: Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum, and Policy debate! No other school was represented in more than one final. Richard Idriss and Aniela Butler represented Juan Diego in Policy debate. They advanced to the final round, where they debated a very tough Lone Peak team, whose top debater is Rep. Jason Chaffetz’s son. Richard and Aniela made short work of the Lone Peak team, winning a 3-0 decision to take the title of best policy debate team in Utah. Meaghan Kelliher and Joe Koronkowski finished second out of 16 in the state for Public Forum. Mac Berg advanced to the final round in Lincoln Douglas debate. He accumulated a 13-1 record during the preliminary portion of the competition, which was the highest at the competition. He had a hard-fought final, but lost in a close decision against a debater from Skyline High School, and finished second out of the 16 top Lincoln Douglas debaters in the state.
