OGDEN — On Aug. 11, the faculty and staff of Saint Joseph Catholic Elementary School gathered for their annual back-to-school retreat, celebrating the upcoming year with the theme “Making a Difference.”
The “Starfish Story” was read. This story is about an old man who walks along a beach and sees a boy picking up starfish and flinging them into the ocean. The man asks why the boy is doing that, and the boy answers that otherwise the starfish would die. The man says that because the beach goes on for miles the boy can’t make a difference. The boy tosses another starfish into the ocean and says, “Made a difference for that one.”
Everyone has the ability to make a difference in the lives of others. The teachers and staff of St. Joseph Elementary want to show their students that a simple act of kindness to a friend or classmate can make a world of difference in that person’s life. They can also make a difference in the community.
Saint Joseph Catholic Schools has partnered again this year with Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah. Each grade has the opportunity to go to CCS to help in the pantry or warehouse each week and may help on Saturdays once a month. This gives St. Joseph Elementary students a firsthand experience to help those in their community who need a little extra help.
