Bishop of Salt Lake City

Speaking of St. Mary Parish, we have just been informed that we will be bidding a fond farewell to Fathers Rock and Prengaman. After 54 years of Jesuit presence in Ogden and now West Haven, our beloved Jesuits have been transferred back to California. I am grateful to the Jesuit California Province for informing us more than one year ago that this transfer would most likely have to happen. The Jesuit provincial finds it necessary to consolidate many of their commitments in several dioceses and Utah is one of them. This is sad news for us all and we will miss our Jesuit priests very much. Father Rock and Father Prengaman worked very hard in this diocese and as you know, recently completed the beautiful new church in West Haven. We are profoundly grateful to these fine priests and their predecessors for more than five decades of service in this diocese. We wish them many more years of health and happiness as Father Rock retires and Father Leo accepts a new assignment.

Of course, Father Patrick Reuse, SJ, Father Paul McCarthy, SJ and Father Joseph Rooney, SJ, Jesuits all, will still be with us. We must pray, through the intercession of St. Ignatius, that many more men will answer Christ’s call to join all our wonderful priests in the diocese to serve at the altar. The vocations are there; we just need to listen more intently!
