The Death Penalty in Utah

Many persons and groups who oppose the death penalty gathered at Scott Matheson Courthouse to protest the death penalty ahead of the hearing that in fact did result in a date given to Mr. Ronnie Lee Gardner. This is an emotional and complex moral question that has evolved over the years. I intend to write a series of articles in the Intermountain Catholic in order to study in greater detail the Catholic Church’s teaching on the death penalty. This teaching is part of the Church’s conviction that all life is sacred, from conception to natural death.

Our little group from the diocese was ably led by Mrs. Dee Rowland. She and the Catholic Peace and Justice Commission were well represented as were many from other groups and walks of life.  A 94-year-old lady by the name of Grandma Ruby Price did a great job in giving testimony to the sanctity of life. She told us that there are 10 commandments and we cannot arbitrarily make them nine! She was very persuasive and may have caused more than a few to rethink their position on the death penalty.
