I had a very interesting meeting at the end of April with state superintendent Larry Shumway and Deputy Superintendent Martell Menlove. They are very excited about a new program being initiating throughout the state to promote better participation by parents in their children’s education. Specifically, they are trying to foster more time spent by parents reading to their children. I told them that we also emphasize the importance of this time between parents and children and we look forward to cooperating in whatever way is appropriate. Sister Catherine Kamphaus, CSC, superintendent for Catholic Schools, is very much aware of these types of programs and is pleased to work together with our public school counterparts for the good of all our children.
