During this time of the year, which the Catholic Church calls Advent but the secular world knows as the pre-Christmas shopping season, Christians experience a profound tension. The Church urges us to prepare for Christ’s coming by intensified prayer and giving to others. The secular world proclaims, “Shop till you drop.” No wonder our hearts can become troubled during this season of peace and good will.

The story that we narrate and celebrate at Christmas needs no rehearsal. We know it by heart. The story has ancient roots in the world before Christ. He who was born in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago had long been expected. The prophet Isaiah foretold a child who would break the yoke that bowed the people’s spirit.
