VATICAN CITY (CNS) — God’s ability to forgive “knows no limits” as his mercy frees people from bitterness and despair, Pope Francis said.
“The Church’s forgiveness must be every bit as broad as that offered by Jesus on the cross and by Mary at his feet. There is no other way,” he said after opening the Holy Door of the Basilica of St. Mary Major Jan. 1, the feast of Mary, Mother of God, and the World Day of Prayer for Peace.

The Christmas season is drawing to a close and the new year is upon us, providing an opportunity to help us focus our attention more fully on the Holy Year of Mercy. The celebration of the Jubilee Year, which began on Dec. 8, and will last through November, gives us ample time to reflect and engage. There will be many special events and commemorations to help us get closer to mercy as “an extraordinary moment of grace and spiritual renewal.”

Watching a loved one struggle through the end of life is heartbreaking. Seeing a person you care about suffer feels unbearable, and compassionate people want to do nothing more than ease the mental and physical burdens on the person. The “Death with Dignity” movement exploits these vulnerable moments by insisting that we can bring our suffering loved one dignity by taking his or her life. As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops notes, “true compassion leads to sharing another’s pain; it does not kill the person whose suffering we cannot bear.”

Every time we come to the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord, I think of one of my favorite scriptural passages taken from the prophet Isaiah. God’s servant, the prophet declares, brings forth justice “not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street.” And in powerful words, the passage says of God’s servant: “A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench.”

St. Ambrose Parish in Salt Lake City hosting a New Year’s Eve Eucharistic Adoration that began at 11:30 p.m., which was followed by a Mass 30 minutes after the Year of Our Lord 2016 was rung in. Father Christopher Gray was the celebrant.
