If Utah Catholics are familiar with only one of the state’s historical figures, that person is surely our first bishop, the Right Rev. Lawrence Scanlan. We’ve all seen his stern visage, scowling at us beneath his furrowed eyebrows. We think of him as our pioneer builder, some of whose structures are still with us: the Cathedral of the Madeleine with its rectory; Holy Cross Hospital (now Salt Lake Regional), St. Ann Orphanage (now Kearns-St. Ann School), Judge Mercy Home and Hospital (now Judge Memorial Catholic High School), and several early parish churches. We know this guy. And some of what we know is actually true.

SALT LAKE CITY — Many parishes throughout the United States depend upon lay ministers to run programs such as religious education, serve as spiritual directors and direct prayer groups. In the Diocese of Salt Lake City, some of these laypeople are educated through the Lay Ecclesial Ministry Formation program, a four-year training offered in both English and Spanish. The current cohorts in both languages are completing their third year of the program; the inaugural group received their certificates in 2010.

Last Saturday hundreds of youth from around Utah gathered at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for the local celebration of World Youth Day. It was an amazing community experience where those present felt proud to be Catholics, comfortable discussing their faith and came away having a closer personal relationship with God.
