How can doughnuts help propagate the Gospel? The question would stump most of us, but the answer was perfectly clear to Father Joseph H. Valine, OP (1897-1992). For 51 years that "simple and holy man," as Bishop Weigand called him, brought the sacraments to sparsely populated rural parts of the diocese, mostly in central and southern Utah, through parishes and missions that he himself created. Contributions placed in the collection baskets among those widely scattered Catholics generated such little income that Fr. Valine largely supported himself and his ministries by his own efforts – farming, then a catering business, and finally selling doughnuts.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Judge Memorial Catholic High School hockey team won its second UHSAA 3A state championship title in a row at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex Feb. 26 with a 5-2 victory over Viewmont High School.

Four students at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary/Middle School were awarded $25 from Knights of Columbus Council 6966 for prize-winning posters in an effort to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse. Awards were presented at All School Mass on Jan. 30, by Knights of Columbus representatives Clarence Illario and Michael Carmody, and art teacher Marcy Mullholand.

OGDEN — More than 100 military members attached to Hill Air Force Base who are serving overseas will receive packages of love sent by the Holy Family Parish youth group, which completed their "Operation Love Our Soldiers" on Feb. 25.
