Donation fills northern Utah food bank shelves

Great Salt Lake Minerals Corp. donated three trucks full of fresh produce, canned goods and other items to the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank in Ogden on Dec. 15. The donation will help the food bank distribute 1,800 holiday baskets to those in need. “This is the first time since last January that our shelves have been full," said Marcie Valdez, CCS Northern Utah director. "We have struggled for the last 11 months to keep enough food coming to serve the number of people that we’re helping every month.” A complete story will appear in the Dec. 23 issue of the Intermountain Catholic.

SALT LAKE CITY -The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe was celebrated all over the Diocese of Salt Lake City Dec. 11-12, with parishioners, no matter their culture, gathering to celebrate the Patron of the Americas. The Catholic Church calendar schedules the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12, the day the Virgin appeared to Saint Juan Diego near Mexico City, and celebrations with different touches gave the diocese a unique color this past weekend.

Order of St. Gregory the Great presented to Dee Rowland

Dee Rowland, who retired in March after 27 years as government liaison for the Diocese of Salt Lake City, was named a Dame in the Order of Saint Gregory the Great by Pope Benedict XVI. The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, who petitioned Rome for the papal honor, presented it to Rowland on Dec. 9 at a diocesan staff luncheon.

While sitting at a Catholic Relief Services (CRS) meeting recently in Dallas, Texas, I marveled at all that is being accomplished by this wonderful organization. CRS has an annual budget of nearly $1 billion and is affecting the lives of over 100 million people in over 100 countries with a staff of over 6,000 people. Pretty impressive stuff!

Utahns join national prayer vigil to urge Congress to extend federal unemployment insurance

SALT LAKE CITY — With more than 13 million people jobless in the United States, prayer vigils across the nation on Dec. 8 urged Congress to extend unemployment insurance benefits. In Salt Lake City, the prayer vigil for the unemployed was held at the Union Labor Center. Speakers included Nicole Dunn, deputy mayor of Salt Lake County; Harold Thomas, an unemployed worker; and representatives of various religions. Jim Judd, president of Utah AFL-CIO, gave the opening and closing remarks.
