Gift of the Drummer tradition kicks off at JDCHS

DRAPER — Juan Diego Catholic High School students and faculty are again helping with the Gift of the Drummer program, which brings underprivileged children in the greater Salt Lake area the joy of Christmas – presents from Santa under the tree and in their stockings on Christmas morning.

SALT LAKE CITY — In his novel You Can’t Go Home Again, the American author Thomas Wolfe said that you can’t go back to the places of your youth and expect to have the same feelings and emotions. When I returned to Saint Ann’s in August as pastor of the parish and administrator of the school, after 25 years away, I was more than a little fearful I would find things so changed that I couldn’t connect, that I would feel displaced and out of touch.

They learn that as stewards of God’s love, they should strive to share their gifts and talents for the service of God and all His people. Some of the opportunities of stewardship they participate in include acts of charity/service and alms giving. These activities teach our students the necessity of their time, talents, and treasure in serving the needs of the community and world today.

DRAPER — John August Swanson, a California artist whose work is housed in the Vatican Museum’s Collection of Modern Religious Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, among other venues, was present at Juan Diego Catholic High School’s 11th annual Spiritus Donorum dinner as six of his serigraphs were unveiled as the most recent work to be added to the school’s collection.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Madeleine Choir School students participated in revolutionary science this November. The students were the beneficiaries of a visit from the Doppler on Wheels, which was temporarily provided to the University of Utah by The Center for Severe Weather Research, a nonprofit based in Boulder, Colo. The truck-mounted radar, called DOW, was provided to the Department of Atmospheric Sciences for several weeks. About a half-dozen schools received visits from the rig and Professor Jim Steenburgh, who was interested in getting students excited about atmospheric science.

SALT LAKE CITY — La cantidad de $200,000 dólares recibidos por parte de los Servicios Migratorios y de Ciudadanía de los Estados Unidos permitirán que Catholic Community Services (CCS por sus siglas en inglés), pueda expander sus servicios de ayuda a los inmigrantes y refugiados para que éstos logren obtener su ciudadanía, así mismo estos fondos ayudarán a incrementar la habilidad de ofrecer sus servicios a más personas en los Centros de Aprendizaje de Inglés de Salt Lake City (ESLC por sus siglas en inglés).
