Students write narratives

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School recently implemented a new writing program, Step Up to Writing from Sopris Learning. Teachers are able to provide a common writing language throughout all grade levels and content areas using multiple strategies for each phase of the writing process. The program uses hands-on writing strategies and activities that help students proficiently write narrative, expository and personal narrative pieces.

SALT LAKE CITY — Human trafficking, "a form of modern-day slavery," is the second largest crime in the United States, with illegal profits in the billions of dollars, said Detective Rob Woodbury of the Salt Lake City Police Department in a presentation on the topic to the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Peace and Justice Commission on Nov. 17.

Christmas is my favorite day of the year. As a kid, it made no difference to me whether Santa Claus or our parents brought the gifts. We celebrated Jesus’ birthday by getting gifts; what could be better than that! Like most young people of my day, preparation for Christmas did not mean going through Advent as much as attempting to be moderate in my requests for "what Santa Claus would bring." However, Advent helps us to focus not on the birthday celebration of Jesus but on Jesus coming to live among us.

I couldn’t believe it, but it was happening – "O Holy Night" gently resounded from the speakers in my car. It was 11:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and I just finished cleaning up after the last Mass at Marquette University. I sat, dumbfounded that Christmas music was already on the radio. I listened for a minute and began to wonder why the "holiday season" starts earlier and earlier each year. What is it about the season that captures the imagination?
