>>>OGDEN – In the spirit of Advent students at Saint Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Ogden are collecting new items for adults and children, including gloves and mittens. All of the items collected will be given to Catholic Community Services in Ogden. These items will benefit those who are less fortunate to help them stay warm during the winter months. Students began collecting the above items toward the end of November and will continue through Christmas break. As the students are bringing in their donated items they are being showcased on clotheslines throughout the school as a reminder of those in need.
>>>SALT LAKE CITY — Hundreds of people from different nationalities gathered on Dec. 17 in the Cathedral of the Madeleine to commemorate the 479th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance to Saint Juan Diego at Tepeyac in Mexico. Pope John Paul II named her patron of the Americas in 1999; her feast day is Dec. 12 but because this year that day was the third Sunday of Advent the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City held celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 10 and Dec. 11.
>>>BRIGHAM CITY — Parishioners from Saint Henry and 10 other churches of various denominations in the Brigham City area gathered under the stars around a bonfire in Watkins Park to sing Christmas carols on Dec. 12. It was Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, and despite the cold the group was rejoicing the Lord is near.

>>>DRAPER — Immigration issues aren’t new – in the 16th century the people indigenous to present-day Mexico suffered an influx of foreigners who completely altered the fabric of their country. Saint Juan Diego, an indigenous Mexican, experienced theses changes, so "I think it’s very fitting on his feast day to talk about this very important question of immigration," the Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of Salt Lake City, told students from Juan Diego Catholic High School and Saint John the Baptist Middle School at an assembly Dec. 9.

>>>BOUNTIFUL — Each year fourth-grade students at St. Olaf Catholic School participate in the Christmas Closet service project, a store where student-made Christmas decorations are sold to raise money to donate to a charity chosen by the class.
