Alma mater supports career soldier

SALT LAKE CITY - Bulldog pride has stretched all the way from Judge Memorial Catholic High School to Iraq.
In mid-November, U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Michael Offe, Judge Memorial Class of 1974, posted a message on Judge Memorial's social media page saying he would like a sweatshirt. Offe joined the U.S. Army in 1974, right out of high school, and is currently stationed in Iraq. >>>

Utah's Catholic schools enrollment numbers buck national trends

The national news has been grim in recent years for Catholic schools, which saw 17.5 percent of schools close and a 17.4 percent decline in student enrollment between the 2000 and 2009 school years. Utah, however, bucked that trend: The number of high school students increased in that period by about 10.5 percent (172 students), while the total of elementary school students declined by less than 2 percent (64 students). >>>

When I taught high school, my students passionately offered complaints and criticisms about the Sunday Mass they were "forced to attend." "Mr. Johnston, it's so boring." "But Mr. Johnston, the music is not good." "Mr. Johnston, our priest doesn't engage us." "Mr. Johnston, why don't they try to make it fun?" These may be valid concerns, but I always challenged my students to think a little deeper. I wanted them to examine their life in Christ as expressed in this communal gathering we call liturgy. So over the course of a semester, we studied the liturgical life of the Church and, in the end, the Spirit moved some of these young people to a deeper appreciation of the liturgy.

Lay ecclesial ministers to be certified Jan. 30

SALT LAKE CITY - Responding to the call to be co-workers in the Lord's vineyard, 20 men and women will receive certification as lay ecclesial ministers at a special Mass celebrated by Bishop John C. Wester on Jan. 30.
