Students Hope for Honduras

Friday, Apr. 29, 2016
The seventh-grade class at Saint Olaf School encouraged parents to go on a date Friday, April 22.
This may be an unusual request from students, but these seventh-graders had a very important reason to make it: They created a student movie night to support a service project that is close to their heart, Hope for Honduras.
As part of this service project, some St. Olaf Girl Scouts had been collecting clothing for an all-girls’ orphanage in Honduras. The troop leader, Colonel Dawn Flynn, had heard that the orphanage had no playground or sporting equipment. She mentioned this at St. Olaf; when the seventh-graders caught wind of this, they chose to raise funds and collect sporting equipment to send to the orphanage.
The money will help purchase playground equipment. Sporting equipment such as soccer goals, uniforms, and balls were donated by art teacher and librarian, Kathy Dorich and her husband, Chris.
On April 22, the students were allowed to open up the entire school to offer inexpensive child care for parents who wished to enjoy a date night while having the assurance that their children would be safely cared for and would have a good time enjoying the movies and various activities.
The children had a choice of three movies in separate classrooms. Those who didn’t want to watch a movie were entertained in separate classrooms with arts and crafts. In addition, the children were treated to pizza, chips, drinks and other snacks.
Movie night for Hope for Honduras raised more $1,000.
